People need to stop calling it "The Purple Line". Supporters started calling it that so as to trick people into thinking that it was affiliated with or connected to the WMATA Metro system which operates the Red, Orange, Green, Blue, and Silver lines. It is not the same as Metro, will not be run by Metro, and will not connect to Metro (without a walk between stations.)

If we want true mass transit, it should be built as heavy rail by WMATA, connected to the existing lines at existing stations, and most importantly should be designed to get people out of their cars, which means that it needs to server people who are car commuters today. The Silver line does this, the "Purple Line" does not. The "Purple Line" is a boondoggle to the carless bus riders of PG County, who work in Montgomery county and do not own cars. While it will be a nice time savings for them, the Purple Line will not improve the traffic situation on local roads, and will in fact make it worse as evidenced by the recent news that the plan calls for actually reducing the number of travel lanes on some roads that it runs down.

Kill this expensive waste of space before it does any more damange, and let the WMATA do their job of serving the transportation needs of the DC Metro Area.

Is there a lockbox provision to ensure that a certain percentage of funds are spent on road maintenance and constructions? Or that any of the funds are spent on transportation at all?

There is not. And the track record of the assembly spending transportation funds on their pet social giveaways is well established. Even if they spend the funds on transportation, they will be going to fund the massive wastes known as the purple line and silver line, meant as gifts to the people in Montgomery, PG, and Baltimore who voted them in to office.

Gas is not priced by the mile, so calculating a "per-mile" cost is stupid at best, and deceitful at worst. The fact is this is the biggest gas tax increase in MD history, and it's been sped through our Socialist assembly by our Socialist governor with promises that it will go towards fixing and expanding roads. This is a lie - the vast majority of this tax increase will go to funding the poorly-planned "Purple Line" (even the name itself is a lie since it will not be part of Metro) and light rail increases in Baltimore. Virtually none of this revenue will go towards roads, or projects outside Montgomery, PG, or Baltimore counties.

    1) These are motels, not hotels. Motels have all the doors to the rooms outside, and you drive around to your room and often walk up stairs. Hotels are classy modern joints where all the rooms are contained within the building, and you take an elevator to your floor.
    2) These run-down motels are NOT assets to the community, they are an embarrasment. Constant prostitution busts, gang parties, and now a murder. Some of these "community assets" charge by the hour rather than by the night.
    3) These motels are supposed to be slated for demolition. The City should expedite this in any way possible, and also require that the new hotels replacing them conform to normal industry standards.

I see another uninformed, unqualified, but probably good-hearted person who has actively looked for something to blame for any problems in their life. The article is rife with factual errors ("microwave-level energy" being just one of them.)

See http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/cellphones. The important part is:
"Although there have been some concerns that radiofrequency energy from cell phones held closely to the head may affect the brain and other tissues, to date there is no evidence from studies of cells, animals, or humans that radiofrequency energy can cause cancer."

There is also a great section about "Why are the findings from different studies of cell phone use and cancer risk inconsistent?" that talks about all the various ways a study can go wrong and show a link where there is none. This type of reporting bias is not limited to RF/health studies.

Cell phones have been widely used for the past 20 years. In that time they have gotten less, not more, powerful (as the number of towers proliferate.) There has been no outbreak of any sort of cancer, disease, or disorder that has been able to be traced to cell phone radiation. Further, there has been no discovered mechanism for this non-ionizing radiation to cause any harm to living tissue.

You clearly are very good at searching out whatever psuedo-scientific bunk supports what you want to believe. It is no use arguing with people like you, who always need to feel they are the victim of something. Enjoy spamming Patch and other sites with your views - the intelligent among us who value the scientific method and evidence-based policymaking will continue to ignore you.

Steven, the problem is that you *are* standing up for what you believe - regardless of its basis in fact. Please stop spreading disinformation and actually educate yourself from reputable sources.
