One meat: The Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club (7719 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda) opened on March 1 in a circa-1938 Art Deco movie house, Bethesda Patch reported. The club underwent a $6 million renovation by the Bozutto group in 2007. To that, operators added a two-level, 1,800-square-foot kitchen and a 35-foot bar that will serve beer, wine and cocktails. Eight days of barbecue festivities wind through DC, MD and VA.
With the new year comes a new cycle of “weeks”: DC Restaurant Week, Bethesda Restaurant Week and now Meat Week. The fourth annual meat extravaganza begins Sunday and continues through Feb. 3, featuring the DMV’s most popular barbecue restaurants, food truck face offs and lots and lots of sweet, smoky meat. Events begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Rockville’s Urban Bar-B-Que, also Montgomery County’s only featured participant. For eight days festivities will wind through DC and Virginia suburbs. After 10 years, the popular restaurant has vacated its Wisconsin Avenue location, and a "for rent" sign hangs above the space. Range—celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's newest restaurant—opened on Dec. 18 in the newly renovated Chevy Chase Pavilion. Range's menu is meat-centric, offering menu items such as potted foie gras, rabbit, scrapple, pork shanks and cheeks, beef marrow bones, veal heart, veal sweetbreads and whole roasted rabbit, "hunter style." Shellfish options include oysters, shrimp, crabs and lobster. Fish dishes include rockfish and black cod with barbecued hazelnuts. Dishes are prepared in the restaurant's open kitchen. Eater DC reports that the restaurant's pizza chef is Edan MacQuaid, who has made pizzas at Local 16, Graffiato, Pizzeria Orso, Red Rocks, Ardeo + Bardeo, 2Amys and Pizzeria Paradiso.
Range isn't all about meat. It's got good pizza covered, too. Eater DC reported that the restaurant's pizza chef is Edan MacQuaid, "who most recently made pies at Local 16 [1602 U St. NW, Washington, DC] and has worked in just about every popular pizza joint in town," Eater DC added. "An Eater writer spotted the cook at [Range] ... over the weekend and confirmed the move," Eater DC added. At Range, the pizza dough (like the other breads served at the restaurant) is made in-house, chefs told Patch. MacQuaid was let go from Local 16 on Nov. 17, he told The Washington Post.
