Mutts Matter: Little Guy With a Big Personality

Duke is a fun-loving, young miniature pinscher mix who gets along well with everyone and is looking for his new family.

Hey guys, my name is Duke and I’m very pleased to meet you! I’m a charming and energetic one-and-a-half-to-two-year-old miniature pinscher mix with loads of personality. I’m the complete package: smart, social, affectionate and playful, with a little mischief mixed in to keep things interesting. I only weigh about 12 pounds, but I’m no shrinking violet, and can run and play with the best of them. Sadly, my owners surrendered me to a shelter in Maryland, and said they just didn’t want me anymore. I don’t understand it, but I’m better off without those guys anyway. I was pretty scared in the shelter and realize how lucky I am to make it out alive. I’ve settled into home life now, and am so thankful for my second chance and the opportunity to…

Mutts Matter: Romeo, the Ladies' Man

Romeo is a young, cuddly American bulldog mix in search of a loving family.

Romeo is a charming 18-month-old American bulldog/terrier mix who weighs in at about 65 pounds, but should be closer to 70 at his ideal weight. He’s a handsome dog with a striking black and white coat, with hints of brindle mixed in. He has soulful puppy dog eyes that he knows how to use to his advantage, and a big bully smile that’s very endearing. Romeo looks a little like “Petey,” the famous dog from The Little Rascals, and has similarly cute expressions.  When I met Romeo and his foster mom, Vicki, at the park for his photo shoot, he was the perfect model—calm, attentive, and he knew how to strike a pose. He warmed up to me right away, took treats gently, and was very engaging. Vicki jokingly calls Romeo the “ladies’ man” because he …

Mutts Matter: Marvelous Max

Max is a sweet and playful spaniel-terrier mix who needs a family to love and belong to.

Meet Max, an adorable spaniel-terrier mix who is about a year old and weighs 23 pounds. Max is a playful and affectionate dog who loves being part of a family, and thrives in an active home. He still has some puppy ways about him and is learning the rules of home life, but he’s a very sweet, good-natured dog and will make a great addition to any family.  Max is being fostered by the Jackson family in Lansdowne, which includes foster mom, Kim, three teenagers, three greyhounds, a sassy little pug mix, and a kitty, too. The Jacksons approach fostering as a family commitment, and Kim feels that fostering is a great lesson for her children about giving back, teaching them that life requires responsibility beyond just themselves. Fostering also…

Adoption Success: Monty's Journey Home

After a tough start, sweet Monty has finally found his family.

Back in September, we featured Monty, a sweet young pit bull who was abandoned by his owner in a parking lot next to a busy highway in Fairfax, then rescued by a local teen, Lauren Bradford. Thankfully, the Bradford family took Monty in instead of looking the other way, and contacted Mutts Matter to help. After an owner gives up on a pup like Monty, they face a tough road finding a new home. In shelters, black dogs are typically the last to be adopted, and close to 90 percent of the pit bulls in our shelters will be put down before being adopted. Not even a year old when he came into the rescue, Monty was very thin and had a lot of scars on his face. We’ll never fully know what he went through in his first year of life, but we do know that…

Mutts Matter: Princess Daisy

Meet Daisy, an adorable and loveable young pug who is ready to be the one and only pup in your life.

Hey, guys! My name is Daisy and I’m so very pleased to meet you. I’m an adorable and loveable three-year-old fawn pug with big, soulful brown eyes and a frowny little face that you can’t help but smile at. I’m your typical pug—sweet and affectionate, love to snuggle, and devoted to my people. I enjoy being the center of attention and, like all princesses, I deserve to be spoiled. I was surrendered by my former owner to a shelter in Maryland, which is no place for a delicate pup like me. I had a few challenges in my former home when they brought a new dog in because I didn’t feel like sharing the spotlight or attention. Besides, why would anyone need another dog when you have me to love and entertain you? Mutts Matter has tested me around …

Mutts Matter: Kia Still Needs a Home

Sweet Kia is a playful and affectionate shepherd mix who still is looking for a loving family and permanent home.

UPDATE: Kia still is looking for her family. She’s in a new foster home and currently lives with two kids (who are 9 and 12), her foster pup sister Carly (whom she adores) and the resident kitty with whom she likes to chase and play. Please read on for Kia’s bio to learn more about her and see if she might be the pup for you.   Hi, guys! My name’s Kia and I’ve been waiting patiently to find my new family. I’m not sure what the hold up is, so I’m taking some time to re-introduce myself because I know they’re out there. I’m still a young pup at only 3 years old, and I have a goofy, playful nature and am an active dog. I weigh about 60 pounds, and Mutts Matter thinks I’m a shepherd mix, though some folks have suggested I may have some …

Mutts Matter: Barney, the Independent Shih Tzu

Meet Barney, a sassy, independent-minded shih tzu on his way to a better life.

Hey, you guys. My name is Barney, and I’m a proud and independent shih tzu. I’m still a young, active pup at two to three years old, and I weigh about 20 pounds. I’m the perfect age: old enough to know what I want and what I like, but young enough to be playful and excited about exploring the world around me. I’m a very sweet dog and obviously adorable, but I’m still learning to trust and figure out how to be part of family. I was rescued from Prince George’s County as part of a cruelty case. My former owner got mad at something and kicked me in the face, and broke two of my front teeth. I will never understand why that happened, or how a grown man could be so cruel to a young pup like me, but I didn’t let it break my spirit. Thankfully, …

Mutts Matter: Sweetie’s Heart of Gold

Meet Sweetie, a delightful Rottweiler mix who has a lot of love to give and deserves a great home.

Sweetie’s name suits her perfectly. She has a heart of gold, a gentle nature and is as sweet as can be. She has not always been properly cared for by her human family, but that hasn’t impacted her spirit or love of people one bit. Sweetie is a 6-year-old, 98-pound Rottweiler mix, a breed that’s often mischaracterized because they are large, dark and powerful dogs. In reality, they are highly intelligent, loyal protectors of their families, and do so well in obedience training that they make excellent service and therapy dogs. Sweetie would be great in a service role because of her loving and calm nature, and her ability to roll through life’s different obstacles with ease. She’s the perfect companion dog: affectionate, loyal, social and …

Mutts Matter: Add a Little Happy-ness to Your Life

Happy is an adorable, playful and entertaining little pup who will make a great sidekick.

When you see Happy, you just have to smile. He’s a little pup with a big personality and a zest for life. He has a great temperament and just wants to play, love and have a family to call his own. Mutts Matter named him Hapsburg, or “Happy” for short, because he’s always smiling, wagging his tail and excited to see you. We think Happy is some type of long-haired Chihuahua mix, and he’s still a young, energetic pup at less than 2 years old. He only weighs 10 pounds and has a silky, golden coat and a funny little underbite that makes him stand out from the pack. We don’t know a lot about Happy’s background because he was picked up as a stray. He’s being fostered by first-time foster dad Matt, who, in the process of looking to adopt a dog, …
