A professional women’s soccer team is coming to Germantown, team administrators announced Wednesday. The Washington Spirit, to be managed by the U.S. Soccer Federation, will train and compete at the Maryland SoccerPlex—the former home of women’s pro team the Washington Freedom, according to the team's general manager Chris Hummer. Mike Jorden, coach of the amateur team that played as the DC United Women at the 'Plex, would lead the Washington Spirit. "Mike is an excellent coach on the training field, a strong game tactician, and he's a great communicator with the players," Hummer said in a statement. Youth soccer will once again be in full swing in Takoma Park this month.
Sept. 18 will mark the beginning of the Takoma Park Soccer league's 29th season. Now somewhat of an institution in the town, the league serves children from nursery school through high school, and runs from from mid-September until late fall. According to league commissioner Howard Cohn, who has been involved with Takoma Park Soccer since his now-grown daughter was a first-grader in 1989, the league is "strictly recreational." It is simply meant to foster a fun, learning, athletic environment.
