For the upcoming presidential inauguration, a number of additional pieces of equipment are being installed in and around the National Mall to handle the expected increase in wireless traffic from advanced smartphones and tablets. While the equipment will allow attendees to update their Facebook statuses, tweet and upload images to Pinterest, it also means that there could be more opportunities for hackers to intercept communications from unwary revelers. One-third fewer attendees are expected to attend this inauguration than the last one, but smartphone and tablet traffic is expected to be up.
Nearly 2 million people flocked to the National Mall for President Barack Obama's historic inauguration in 2009. This year, for his second swearing-in, projections peg the crowds to be between 600,000 and 800,000, according to a WJLA report. Mike Cornfield, a George Washington University political science professor quoted in the story, offered a possible reason for the projected downturn in attendance: "It simply lacks the dramatic transfer of power from one president to the next." WJLA also detailed comments President Obama uttered to supporters while campaigning: I think a lot of folks feel that, "Well, he's now president. He's a little grayer. He's a little older. Muppets, puppets and Sesame Street characters are headed for the nation’s capital in November to protest presidential contender Mitt Romney's threat to cut funding for public broadcasting, where the television show Sesame Street has aired for decades. Organizers say friends of the Public Broadcasting Service will gather Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. on the National Mall to defend PBS. The grassroots movement was sparked shortly after comments to cut the PBS budget were made by Romney during the first presidential debate. Organizers are encouraging protesters to bring their puppets. The famous dog trainer was in the DC area for the largest pack walk on the National Mall.
Dog trainer Cesar Millan hosted a pack walk along the National Mall Saturday in DC as a way to raise awareness about spaying and neutering pets. Nearly 1,800 people participated in the walk, according to Millan's foundation website, and $63,625 was raised for his foundation—which rescues and rehabilitates abused and abandoned dogs.
