White Knuckle Parenting: Happy Birthday, Martin!

Of all the holidays to celebrate, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is one that my children look forward to every year.

There are so many holidays for kids to celebrate, most of them requiring the purchase of things. Halloween requires costumes and candy, Valentine's Day requires cards and candy, Christmas requires gifts and candy, and Easter requires baskets, commercial dyes, and...candy. (I figure it will only be a couple more years before Peeps comes up with a Labor Day candy. Maybe little marshmallow chickens carrying "ON STRIKE" signs.) That is why I am so glad to see that my children have embraced a meaningful holiday in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which has become an annual day of celebration in my family. What Happens When Inauguration Day Lands on a Federal Holiday?

For only the second time in history, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the public ceremony for the presidential inauguration will occur on the same day: Jan. 21, 2013. Ronald Reagan's second inauguration also coincided with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on Jan. 21, 1985. With inauguration falling on a Federal Holiday, won't all Federal and States employees (park service police, police, EMT support, etc.....) get double/holiday pay. The associated costs tor holding an inauguration event are huge. Alrhought put more money in folks pay checks is good, and theoretically they will spend that extra $, which theoretically will help local businesses etc.... tto add this …   more ›

Montgomery County Lists MLK Day Observances

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day takes place Monday, Jan. 16 and Montgomery County is encouraging residents to take advantage of the federal holiday and volunteer their time and services to benefiting the community. The Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center will host the county’s main celebration this year on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m., with projects such as decorating cards for veterans, assembling sandwiches with Whole Foods for local shelters, constructing fleece blankets for Montgomery Hospice and packing Snow Day boxes for Meals on Wheels. Following the events at Marriott, an MLK Tribute concert will be held at the Music Center at Strathmore at 4 p.m. A select number of tickets for the free show will be available from 3 to 3…
