20 Local Businesses Make Second Round of InvestMaryland Challenge

Competition offers grants and services to life science and high tech companies.

Several companies across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties have made it to the second round of the InvestMaryland Challenge, a competition in which start-up companies can win a portion of $300,000 in grants and/or business services. Of the 250 companies that initially applied to the competition, 71 were selected to advance to the second round, with 20 in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. In the second round, the entrants’ business plans will be reviewed and judged with semi-finalists announced Feb. 19, and the Governor’s Cup Award Ceremony on April 15. Montgomery County Wins $160K Public Safety Grant

The award was among $6.3 million given to Maryland's state and local governments by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Montgomery County has been awarded $159,701 in federal funding earmarked for violent crime reduction and other public safety activities, Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin announced Thursday. The U.S. Department of Justice grant is one in a $6.3 million bundle given to the state, county, and local governments of Maryland. The county's share will be used to install a system that can deliver video intelligence wirelessly to commanders and operational personnel in an emergency and to develop the capability to share that data with other law enforcement agencies. City of Takoma Park Now Accepting Community Development Block Grant Applications

Community organizations can apply for funds until Sept. 24, 2012.

Community organizations that work in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods have until Sept. 24 to apply for project funding from a government grant. Each year, the City of Takoma Park receives a Community Development Block Grant (CDGB) to fund activities that benefit low- and moderate-income community residents. The funding comes from the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) via the Montgomery County Government. Interested community organizations can apply for a portion of those funds for neighborhood revitalization, economic development and / or improved community facilities and services.
