Hotels, restaurants preparing to cater to tournament-goers this week.
It may not be as large of an event as last year’s U.S. Open, but Montgomery County businesses are preparing for an economic boost from this week’s AT&T National Golf Tournament. The tournament will bring 120 of the top PGA Tour professionals—including Tiger Woods—to compete at Congressional Country Club. Woods, who founded the AT&T National Golf Tournament, was the winner in 2009—the last year it was played at Congressional. The tournament returns after Congressional played host to last year’s U.S. Open, which drew nearly 230,000 attendees and had an estimated economic impact of between $130 and $150 million in the county. Tiger Woods' golf tournament returns to Congressional this week.
The AT&T National Golf Tournament is returning to Bethesda this week, bringing 120 of the top PGA Tour professionals – including Tiger Woods – to compete at Congressional Country Club. Woods, who founded the tournament, was the winner in 2009 -- the last year it was played at Congressional. The tournament returns after Congressional played host to last year’s U.S. Open. The county executive declared June 8-19 "The First Tee Week" in Montgomery County.
With U.S. Open Championship fever—and traffic—gripping the county, County Executive Isiah Leggett recently proclaimed June 8-19 as “The First Tee Week” in Montgomery County. The First Tee, an initiative of the World Golf Association with support from the PGA and LPGA, has a mission “to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf,” according to the nonprofit’s Web site. Charity golf tournament co-commissioner Steve DuBos speaks with Patch about the Rumors Golf Tournament, which benefits the Takoma Park Library.
For the past nine years, the RedGate Golf Course in Rockville has hosted the Rumors Golf Tournament, a charity event memorializing former Takoma Park resident Mike Morrissey. Proceeds from the tournament are donated to the Takoma Park Library. Since the tournament began, more than $40,000 have been donated to the library in Morrissey's memory. The ninth annual event took place on Monday. Tournament co-commissioner Steve DuBos hopes to raise an additional $4,000 from the 2010 proceedings.
