Veterans Plaza is now home to a ice rink that's attracting ice skaters young and old.
Calling all ice skaters: Downtown Silver Spring's new ice rink is open and business is brisk. "We've been pretty busy, especially the weekends," said Mercedes Gavigan, a manager trainee for Tri-State Ice Management, LLC, the company that was recently awarded the contract to manage the rink. "The Sunday after [Christmas] was insane. It was very intense." Gavigan, a former high school ice hockey player, estimated that there were about 500 ice skaters who braved the chilly temps to take a spin on the ice. Silver Spring resident Gabriela Newburgh, 9, her sister Cristina, 4, and their parents ventured to the ice rink during this holiday week to check out the new business on the block.
