Report: County Signs Contract With Company Behind DC Bikeshare

Bikes should be available in Silver Spring, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Takoma Park in August or September, WTOP reported.

The company that already operates the bikeshare program in the District of Columbia and Arlington and Alexandria in Virginia will run Montgomery County's bikeshare program, WTOP reported. Alta Bicycle Share signed a contract with county officials Wednesday to create more than 29 docks for 200 rentable bikes in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Silver Spring and Takoma Park, according to the radio station. The company should be able to deliver the bikes in the next four to five months, meaning the program would be up and running in August or September of this year.  Meanwhile, county councilmembers are discussing how to improve safety for bike riders, including adding more bike lanes and possibly employing a shared lane system, like the ones in DC and…

Late September Launch Expected For Downcounty Bikeshare System

29 docking stations with 200 bikes are planned for Friendship Heights, Bethesda, Medical Center, Takoma Park and Silver Spring.

The first phase of a bikeshare system could be up and running by Sept. 21, Sandra Brecher of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation said Monday. Speaking at a meeting of the Western Montomery County Citizens Advisory Board, Brecher outlined a timeline for the system, which will offer a low-cost alternative transportation method in the most congested portions of the county. Phase one, funded through a state transportation grant, calls for 29 docking stations with 200 bikes in Bethesda, Friendship Heights, Medical Center, Takoma Park and Silver Spring. The system is planned to build off of the success of Capital Bikeshare and is designed for "point-to-point connections" between home and transit or transit and work to extend the …

Developers Could Help Fund Downcounty Bikeshare System

Transportation impact taxes -- paid by developers for transportation improvements -- would be used to fund the system under legislation introduced Tuesday.

A new downcounty bikeshare system could be funded in part by transportation impact tax revenues under legislation introduced Tuesday by Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner (D-Dist. 1) and Councilwoman Valerie Ervin (D-Dist. 5). The system, planned for Friendship Heights, Bethesda, Medical Center, Takoma Park, Silver Spring, and eventually, Wheaton and Forest Glen, is aimed to offer up a low-cost alternative transportation method in the most congested portions of the county. The network is planned to build off of the success of Capital Bikeshare, which has already seen increasing demand in Arlington and Washington, D.C., logging more than 1.5 million bike trips in its first 18 months. The transportation impact tax is paid by …

Montgomery County Readies Application for Bikeshare Funding

Montgomery County Department of Transportation staff are preparing an application for government funding for a bikeshare program along both branches of Metro's Red Line.

Montgomery County is pedaling ever closer to getting a bikeshare program going along both branches of Metro’s Red Line. The popular bright red Capital Bikeshare bikes of Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Va., made a cameo appearance Tuesday night at an open house at Rockville’s Executive Office Building, when local residents offered suggestions to county transportation officials about where they thought bikeshare stations should be located in Montgomery County. The Capital Bikeshare program is a model for the planned bikeshare program in Montgomery County, and the open house was held as part of the county transportation department’s application for government funds, administered through the Maryland Department of Transportation, to start up…

Bikeshare Could Come to Takoma Park

A public meeting will be held Nov. 29.

If you're looking for more biking options in Takoma Park, then let your voice be heard. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation will be discussing bikeshare options at several Montgomery County Metro stations along the red line, including Takoma Park, at a meeting Nov. 29 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the lobby auditorium of the Executive Office Building at 101 Monroe Street in Rockville. The county wants the public to provide comments on a bikesharing initiative proposed for an area stretching from the District of Columbia line to the Beltway along both Montgomery County portions of the Metrorail Red Line, including Takoma Park, Silver Spring, Forest Glen and Wheaton on the eastern metrorail leg, and Friendship Heights, Bethesda and …
