Man Arrested in Takoma Park Auto Theft

The man was also arrested for possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

A Temple Hills man was arrested Tuesday in connection with an auto theft in Takoma Park. Troy Lamont Sweetney, 22, was arrested for auto theft, possession of burglary tools, theft over $1,000, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and CDS paraphernalia, Takoma Park Police said. On Oct. 2 around 12:11 p.m., police saw a car in a back parking lot in the 7400 black of New Hampshire Ave that had tags for a stolen vehicle out of Prince George's County. About 20 minutes later, Sweetney was seen entering the vehicle. Police approached Sweetney and saw a screwdriver in his hand and that the steering column on the car was broken. Takoma Park Police Adding Detail After Another Auto Theft

The most recent auto theft has residents concerned.

Since January 31 there have been elevent incidents at two gas stations on New Hampshire Avenue on the border of Takoma Park and Washington, D.C. There were eight theft from autos, three auto thefts and one commercial armed robbery. Takoma Park Police have charged four suspects involved in several of those incidents at both the Sunoco in the 6300 block of New Hampshire Avenue and the W Express on New Hampshire Avenue. But a recent stolen auto from the Sunoco Gas Station in the 6300 block of New Hampshire Avenue has renewed concern, according to Takoma Park Police Chief Ronald Ricucci. Vehicle Stolen on Wildwood Drive

The victim left the vehicle idling and unattended.

An idling, unattended vehicle was stolen from the 7500 block of Wildwood Drive Saturday afternoon, according to Takoma Park Police. Police responded to the scene at approximately 3:08 p.m. on Oct. 29 for reports of an auto theft. The vehicle’s engine was left running and when the victim returned to the vehicle, it was gone, police said.  The vehicle is described as a 2001 burgundy or maroon BMW X5 (SUV) with Maryland tag number 617M105, police said. A description of the vehicle was provided to surrounding jurisdictions.  The victim had various items of personal property in the vehicle.
