With the Takoma Park Folk Festival coming up Sept. 9 we thought we'd take a trip down memory lane to the last to folk festivals.
The festival is free to everyone.
In a little over a week, Takoma Park Middle School will be flooded with lovers of folk music. This year, the 35th edition of the Takoma Park Folk Festival, on Sept. 9, will be honoring the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie. "That first year, 1978, a one-stage festival was held at Takoma Park Junior High School, and it raised about $1,100 to help keep the Takoma Theatre out of the hands of a developer," according to the festival website. The festival will run from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and is free to everyone. There will be music and dance from around the world on seven stages. You don't have to leave Takoma Park for some good old fashioned weekend fun. Every first Friday of the month, El Golfo Restaurant is hosting the Takoma Cabaret. Be a part of the Third Thursday Poetry Series.
The third Thursday night, Voices travel through the hall, Poets wail in verse. Takoma Park is looking for a few good poets to fill its Third Thursday poetry series. The series is hosted by Martin FitzPatric and will be in its seventh season this fall. If you are interested in being included in the series, submit three to five of your poems and a short bio of yourself to SaraD@takomagov.org.

The event will be July 29 in Old Takoma.
Environmentalism and art will meet July 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old Takoma Gazebo with Mayor Bruce Williams, Recycling Artist-in-Residence Renee Lachman and Public Works Director Daryl Braithwaite. There wil be a Trashy Art contest where anyone can submit an original 2 or 3 dimensional work of “trashy art” made of 100 percent trash or re-purposed materials. To participate, drop off your “trashy art” at the Gazebo in Old Takoma between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on July 29. Panel of distinguished judges will announce the winners at 12:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Takoma Park, the Takoma Park Arts and Humanities Commission in partnership with the Old Takoma Business Association.
