I'll Have Another Wins Another—at Preakness

With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.

I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. In the process, I'll Have Another kept alive hopes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown champion in more than three decades. “More than anything, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint people,” said Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another’s jockey.  “Like I say, it’s not about me. It is about the horse.  From day one, I’ve believed in him.  I’m so happy for him because he’s just a great horse.” Affirmed, in 1978, was the last colt to capture the …

Weigh In On Orioles vs. Nationals

The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.

The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …

Sports Fans, Tourists, Track Work Could Mean Metro Delays

Transit group: Postpone scheduled track work on Saturday.

Transit advocates are calling on Metro to postpone track maintenance scheduled for Saturday when Metro is expected to see an influx of riders to big games for Washington’s hockey and baseball teams. With the weather warming up, Saturday also is expected to be a busy day for tourists using the transit system to visit Washington. “With trains running only once every 24 minutes on most of the Red Line, and four stations shut on the Green Line, the system will not be able to meet the need for its services,” Action Committee for Transit President Tina Slater wrote in a letter sent Tuesday night to Metro General Manager Richard Sarles. The track work and two home games for DC sports teams could make the Saturday midday ride a long one for some …

Oh, How I Love Takoma Soccer!

(But can we reconsider the snacks?)

In this age of obesity, videogames, cut-throat competition and ridiculously long drives to chilren’s soccer games in overpriced leagues, there is an oasis of sanity: Takoma Park soccer. Because of Takoma soccer, and the legions of volunteer organizers, coaches, assistant coaches, linespeople and referees, my kids have learned ball handling skills, not to give up when you’re losing and how to have fun with just a ball and another kid. All without my dipping into the college fund to pay soccer fees or, usually, even backing the car out of the garage. No more drives to Poolesville. And there’s good sportsmanship, usually by both kids and parents. One Monday downtown, a colleague was laughing because at his kid’s baseball game in Bethesda a …

Readers' Choice: RedGate Golf Course

RedGate Golf Course won by a large margin.

In 2000 Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open by 12 strokes, the largest margin ever in the tournament's history. It was an honest-to-goodness blowout. Well here at Readers' Choice we had a routing of similar proportions this week. Last week asked readers what their favorite public golf courses were in three regions with Northwest Golf Course, Little Bennett Golf Course and RedGate Municipal Golf Course winning the three regions. This week we put them all head-to-head for a battle royale of best public golf course in Montgomery County. The readers spoke loudly. RedGate Golf Course in Rockville won with 77 percent of the vote, or 129 votes. Little Bennett Golf Course came in second with 23 votes and Northwest Golf Course came in third with 15.

Of these 3 I vote for Northwest Park, Redgate 2nd and Little Bennett 3rd. Northwest is long and traditional and usually in pretty good shape. Redgate is usually in good shape with a number of blind shots and is hilly. Little Bennett has gone down hill, condition is not as good as it used to be. Some of the greens are "always" in bad shape.   more ›

Poll: How Will the Nationals Do This Season?

Do you think the Nats can make a playoff run?

It's been 159 days since a Washington Nationals game that counted has been played. But, thankfully, Thursday that will change as the Washington Nationals play the Chicago Cubs on opening day of the 2012 baseball season. So the question is, how do you think the Nationals will do this season?
