Montgomery County Public Schools will spend $20 million of its budget on salary increases for employees, officials announced Monday.
Public school workers in Montgomery County will see their first pay raise in years, school officials said Monday. Three different employee unions—the Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA), the Service Employees International Union Local 500 (SEIU) and the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP)—negotiated a fiscal year 2013 salary increase of about 3.4 percent for their members. The raises, which will come after a three-year freeze in cost-of-living increases, will cost Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) $20 million, or about one percent of its $2.1 billion budget. “This agreement is about sustainability. Montgomery Blair High School took home some hardware in the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium May 2-6. Blair student Jessica Lu was the only student from the mid-Atlantic region to place in the competition. She took third for her research titled, “Determination of Binding Energy Hotspots on a Broadly Neutralizing Antibody against HIV-1." “The students I've met are so talented, smart, and funny and are truly the cream of the crop of the next generation of science/engineering leaders," Lu said. A Montgomery Blair High School student received the honor of being named a member of the 2012 USA Mathematical Olympiad Team (USAMOT) on May 9. Samuel Zbarsky—a junior in the Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science Magnet Program—will join an elite team of 12 as they travel to Slovenia to compete in the 2012 International Linguistics Olympiad, which will be held July 29 to Aug. 4. Zbarsky will also take part in a Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During this time, he will be given the chance to join five of his teammates to compete at the 53rd International Mathematical Olympiad competition (IMO). Representatives from Montgomery County Police, Montgomery County Public Schools and the Montgomery County State's Attorney will answer questions related to teen drinking and substance abuse in Montgomery County.
Do you think teenage drinking is a growing problem in Montgomery County? Is substance abuse getting out of hand? Are you just curious about the issues? Community leaders including police, school principals, representatives from the Montgomery County State's Attorney's office and school board members will come together tonight to present a community action forum on teen drinking and substance abuse. After a presentation from the panel, the floor will be open to questions and discussion about the risks and life impact of teenage substance abuse. The presentation starts at 7 p.m. in the Montgomery County Public Schools Carver Educational Services Center Auditorium located at 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville.
Kids will get a chance to experience what it's like to be a police officer.
Takoma Park Police Department, in partnership with the Takoma Park Recreation Department, will give kids a chance to experience the life of a cop. The department will hold four sessions of a one-day Junior Police Academy. Attendees will be introduced to law enforcement, patrol procedures, criminal investigations, meet the canine officer and learn tips on how to prevent crime and bullying, according to a Takoma Park Police news release. There are ten slots for each session and the class is free. All participants must wear sneakers and dress appropriately. Registration for children age six to 12 begins May 14. Students from Piney Branch Elementary School are riding their bicycles from 7620 Maple Ave. to their school at 9 a.m. with the help of the Takoma Park Police to raise awareness for National Bike Safety Month. Before the ride, Mayor Bruce Williams will present a proclamation designating May 9 Bike to School Day in Takoma Park. Students will also learn proper helmet fitting and a bike safety check before taking their ride. Four teams from Montgomery Blair High School demolished the competition in the 2012 Montgomery County Envirothon. Teams from Blair took first, second, third and fifth place among 22 teams at the event, which was held at the Montgomery County Agriculture History Farm Park. The first place winners from Blair will represent the county in the 2012 Maryland Envirothon Competition June 20-21 at St. James High School. In the 22-year history of the state competition, Blair has had multiple first place teams and has previously finished as one of the top five teams in the country, according to a news release. Not that it makes a huge difference but there were two girls killed in that wreck on River Road. Not three. Didone gets that wrong all of the time. I doubt seriously if there is any epidemic. its kids being teenagers. Yesterday six girls were found drinking in some woods near Great Seneca Hghwy.
