Montgomery County Public Schools will spend $20 million of its budget on salary increases for employees, officials announced Monday.
Public school workers in Montgomery County will see their first pay raise in years, school officials said Monday. Three different employee unions—the Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA), the Service Employees International Union Local 500 (SEIU) and the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP)—negotiated a fiscal year 2013 salary increase of about 3.4 percent for their members. The raises, which will come after a three-year freeze in cost-of-living increases, will cost Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) $20 million, or about one percent of its $2.1 billion budget. “This agreement is about sustainability. If we are going to sustain our history of excellence and sustain the reputation of …

Blowing a bubble, riding “no hands” and saying no to the 5th grade ladies.
Summer vacation begins in less than a month, and it’s time to assess whether your kid has learned all the lessons appropriate to his or her age. With the pre-schoolers, can they blow bubbles? Yes, it’s great that they’re going to robotics camp and curing cancer by the end of August but if they can’t take a hard piece of bubble gum, chew it into submission and then blow a monster bubble that gets on their glasses, they’re behind. Buy a bag of bubble gum and get them on it. Pre-schoolers should also be learning to make fart noises with their hands under their armpits. The truly talented will also figure out how to make fart noises with their hands at the back of their knees and my son, I am proud to say, can make fart noises with just his …

With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.
I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. In the process, I'll Have Another kept alive hopes for horse racing’s first Triple Crown champion in more than three decades. “More than anything, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint people,” said Mario Gutierrez, I’ll Have Another’s jockey. “Like I say, it’s not about me. It is about the horse. From day one, I’ve believed in him. I’m so happy for him because he’s just a great horse.” Affirmed, in 1978, was the last colt to capture the …

The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.
The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …

Operating budget for fiscal 2013 set to be formally adopted May 24.
The Montgomery County Council tentatively agreed Thursday on a $4.6 billion county operating budget for fiscal 2013. The budget, along with a construction spending plan through fiscal year 2018, is set for formal approval May 24. “Our priorities have been, and will continue to be, our world-class school system, public safety, safety net service and growing our economy. This budget reflects that,” Council President Roger Berliner (D-Dist 1) said in a statement.
