Five Sporting Reasons to Welcome the Winter Weather

Appreciate the cooler temperatures as December approaches.

Temperatures may be swiftly dropping, but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of sporting opportunities as winter nears.

Here are my five reasons to welcome the cooler weather.

Chilly outdoor weather is a perfect excuse to check out what's going on inside. Willow Street Yoga currently has classes scheduled until Dec. 19.

2. Recreation Department Activities

There are plenty of activities, particularly youth sports, noted in the Takoma Park Recreation Department's fall schedule, which are scheduled in the weeks to come. Youth basketball, which attracted 500 kids in 2009, is currently conducting registration.

3. Baltimore Avenue

Should we get snow this winter, head over to Baltimore Avenue, as it's perfect for sledding when the snow is compacted. The street has three hills, one from Eastern Avenue, one that dips down from the other direction into the Albany Avenue triangle, and a third that heads toward Philadelphia Avenue. So get your sled ready – there's plenty of room for everyone.

4. Your Dog

Dogs don't care if the temperature drops. Well, I should say real dogs don't care. I can't speak for the rodents (Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Shi Tzus, etc). Let your canine motivate you to do a little cardio, even if it means strapping on extra layers.

5.

Our farmers market happens rain or shine, every Sunday. Let those farmers, who tough out the nasty weather, serve as inspiration every time you're feeling too lazy to exercise this winter. Or, reward yourself on Sundays. Don't exercise all week, then jog to the market, pick up some food, and jog home. Mission accomplished.
