Monitoring cameras and security features that prompt visitors to check in with school administration are part of a security upgrade for Montgomery County Public Schools approved Tuesday by the Montgomery County Council.

The security changes will cost about $9 million, The Gazette reported, with $4 million coming from state funds and the rest allocated in the Capital Improvements Program budget for fiscal 2013 to fiscal 2018.

Along with the building changes, schools will work with students to prepare for potential disasters, the newspaper reported.

“It’s developing that culture and understanding,” James Song, director of the school system’s Department of Facilities Management, told The Gazette.
