Week in Review: Council Annexes Flower Ave

Here's the news from Takoma Park.

It's been another busy week here at Takoma Park Patch HQ.

, Takoma Park City Council voted unanimously Monday night to start the process of annexing Flower Avenue from Piney Branch Road to Carroll Avenue and turn it into a green street. The project is set to start in about a year, Deputy City Manager Suzanne Ludlow said.

Still, some councilmembers, including Josh Wright (Ward 1) were concerned about the cost of the project, which has yet to be established. The city is getting $200,000 from the county and $696,000 from the state to restore the road. But without knowing the cost of the renovation, Wright feared the city would have to dip into it's own budget.

So Wright presented a resolution stating that the road reconstruction could not exceed the money collected from the state and county. It passed 4-3.

Several consultants have said the project could be finished within the $896,000 budget Ludlow said. And Mayor Bruce Williams said he was confident the renovation could be done within budget.

, it's an appropriate time, with the events in Japan, to discuss the good and bad aspects of nuclear power. And leave it to Takoma Park host a whole film series on the topic. Starting April 5, the Nuclear Free Takoma Park Committee will host weekly films on the nuclear issue. All films are at 7:30 p.m. in the Takoma Park Auditorium.

And in Purple Line news, a panel discussed how plans for the Purple Line are progressing and what that means for the Takoma Langley Crossroads. Check back Monday. We'll have a primer on things you need to know about the Purple Line.
