She is the first woman to head up the U.S. Coast Guard Academy

A Takoma Park native will become the first woman to take over the top spot in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, The Boston Globe reported Saturday.

Rear Admiral Sandra Stosz, who graduated from the academy in 1982, the third class to include female cadets, took over as the academy's 40th superintendent, the Globe reported.

Stosz, 51, previously was the Coast Guard’s director of reserve and leadership, according to the Globe, and also commanded two cutters over 12 years.
