Speak Out: SHA Ownership of MD 410

Are you worried about the ownership of the road?

Tonight the Takoma Park City Council will vote on whether to approve a memorandum of understanding that the Maryland State Highway Association owns MD 410 between Ethan Allen Avenue and Philadelphia Avenue in Takoma Park.

We want to know whether you are worried that the city will no longer have control over what happens to the road. Some residents are worried that the SHA will widen the road without any input from residents.

Let us know what you think.

Thanks for the comment, Robert. Any thoughts on this, dear readers?

I've lived on Philadelphia Avenue for more than 30 years. I'm not sure why I've always thought that 410 is a state highway but have attributed the speedy snowplowing of 410 to that fact. Now I think I must have been living under a rock to not have known that responsibility/ownership of 410 has been an issue. It would certainly be unfortunate if the street were widened -- how could that be done without infringing on the houses lining the street (like mine)? Does anyone know if the state has expressed an intention, or a consideration, of widening the street? (Now I'll go to the Takoma Park City Council website to see what happened last night!)

I've lived on Ethan Allen Ave for several years. My three concerns, in order of priority, are: 1. Cars speed around the curve, traveling east just before coming to the church, making it extremely dangerous for cars pulling out of their driveway. There is no effective signage or oversight preventing this daily dangerous situation. What can be done about this City Council? 2. Road upkeep, especially pothole repair, has been poor over the years. Who will be responsible for it now? 3. Widening the road is hardly what anyone in Takoma Park wants for their community.

Takoma Park should take over all functions on 410 and boot the state out. The state has done a poor job of maintenance and has talked about widening the road as far back as I can remember. I'm sure that our Public Works Dept can do a better job of maintenance. If it requires some extra revenue, it would surely be worth it.

Fran - The state has said that it doesn't plan to widen 410, but people are concerned that the state still has the power to.
