Report: County Signs Contract With Company Behind DC Bikeshare

Bikes should be available in Silver Spring, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Takoma Park in August or September, WTOP reported.

The company that already operates the bikeshare program in the District of Columbia and Arlington and Alexandria in Virginia will run Montgomery County's bikeshare program, WTOP reported.

Alta Bicycle Share signed a contract with county officials Wednesday to create more than 29 docks for 200 rentable bikes in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Silver Spring and Takoma Park, according to the radio station.

The company should be able to deliver the bikes in the next four to five months, meaning the program would be up and running in August or September of this year.

Meanwhile, county councilmembers are discussing how to improve safety for bike riders, including adding more bike lanes and possibly employing a shared lane system, like the ones in DC and Arlington.

Sierra Club of Montgomery County hosted a group bike ride through Silver Spring and Takoma Park last weekend to highlight the need for bike safety in the county before bike share becomes a reality.

"Montgomery County has built up a really great network [of bike lanes] except they're not connected and they're hard to find, so they're under-used," Ethan Goffman, transit chair of the Montgomery County Sierra Club, told Patch.

The organization created a bike statement that challenges county officials to create a more complete network of bike lanes that is safe and convenient for bikers.

(Locations for the bikeshare docks have not been finalized, but see a map of proposed stations at the top of this article.)

so what tax will go up in order to pay for Bike Share? Bikers should pay their own way.

What a wonderful idea with all the illegals, give aways for welfare and the such in Montgomery County now we have bike sharing. The left strikes again. Of course only taxpaying citizins will have to pay to use these bikes all freeloading welfare people will get them for free. This will be a great help for the copy cat terrorist bombers to get away from the bombs after they plant them. It they do not have to show ID to vote will they have to show ID to use a bike. Hey all come free bikes in MC. Idoits

What an idiotic comment. Billions of subsidies for car users, but she whines about pennies being spent on a bike network.

Holy crap, an even dumber comment. The bikes aren't free - have you never been to DC/other city in your life? Are you completely ignorant of the world around you? What a racist piece of crap you are. What does this have to do with illegals, the left, IDs, or terrorism? The answer is nothing, idiot.

Joe, bikeshares are typically operated on a pay scale—you pay for how long you want to ride. No one gets the bikes for free.
