Rave and Barclay to be Remembered at Takoma Park Council Meeting

The hiring of a sustainability coordinator will also be discussed.

Tuesday night's council meeting will be a somber one as the council will remember two Takoma Park residents who died recently.

Walter Rave, , was a well-known environmental activist in the city and served as Takoma Park's tool librarian from 1988 to 2007.

Betty Barclay passed away Nov. 13 and was the library director of the Takoma Park Library from 1973 to 1982. She was known for her friendliness and dedication, her improvements to municipal library service, and her extensive book knowledge, according to the city council agenda.

The council will also discuss the hiring of a sustainability coordinator.  from the budget to hire a coordinator at the recommendation of the Task Force on Environmental Action.

City staff has developed two draft class specifications for the positions of sustainability manager and sustainability coordinator. The positions are similar, except that the sustainability manager would supervise certain tasks of the Takoma Park Public Works Department such as the urban forest, sanitation and the city engineer/storm water.

Last year's council wanted the position to be filled by a contractor, but the sustainability manager position would be better suited to a full-time, city staff position according to the council agenda drafted by Takoma Park City Manager Barbara Matthews.
