Mizeur Heartbroken Over Failure of Same Sex Marriage Bill

Delegate will keep up the fight for gay marriage.

In an e-mail to her constituents yesterday, openly gay Delegate Heather Mizeur (D-Dist. 20) said that although Maryland likely won't see gay marriage legalize this legislative session, the fight for marriage rights is far from over.

"Today, the house of delegates recommitted marriage equality legislation to committee," Mizeur said in the e-mail. "Tomorrow, we must recommit ourselves to the hard work of protecting our families without marriage to back us up."

The measure passed the senate two weeks ago by a 25-21 vote without much controversy, but was sent back into committee by the house Friday.

"Deborah and I are among more than 15,000 families in our state that are heartbroken," Mizeur, referring to her partner, said in the e-mail. "Just years ago, we had to fight with all our might to secure basic protections for our families. Today, we came within votes of full marriage equality."
