Lorig Charkoudian Announces Bid for Takoma Park Ward 2 City Council

Charkoudian will be running against another newcomer, Tim Male.

On the heels of for his bid to take over the Takoma Park Ward 2 council seat, Lorig Charkoudian announced through a local listserv that she would seek the seat as well.

Charkoudian has spent the last 16 years of her private working professionally life in dispute resolution and has a Ph.D. in economics.
On her campaign website Charkoudian listed these goals:

  • I want to lead the Council in reclaiming its role as a progressive community leader in areas such as environmental policy, recreation, local food policy, and economic development.  Many significant opportunities for progressive action never make it to the Council agenda, and I will work with the Mayor and Council to bring them to the table.

  • I want to harness the potential of participatory democracy and make the City more accountable to its residents.  I will promote transparent, data-driven analysis of trends in areas such as public safety, environmental impact, housing, and the effectiveness of city services.  I will increase and enhance opportunities for residents to have input into policy decisions; and work to develop a year-round pro-active budget process, coordinated with a Budget Committee made up of councilmembers, residents, and staff.

  • I want to prioritize pedestrian and bike safety in neighborhoods and on main streets, through a systems analysis of traffic flow and development of comprehensive solutions.  This will require fixing the Junction traffic issues, which affect all Ward 2 residents through cut-through traffic; as well as affecting residents using and passing through the Junction themselves, as pedestrians, on bikes, or in cars.
