Local Mayors Join Marriage Equality Group

Eighty mayors from around the country have signed on

Takoma Park's Bruce Williams is among four local mayors who have signed on to Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a bipartisan group that has pledged its support for marriage equality.

Joining him locally are Kensington's Peter Fosselman, Town of Chevy Chase Mayor David Lublin and Somerset Mayor Jerry Slavin.

So far, 80 mayors have signed up, and the group formally launched its efforts Friday at the Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C.

Among the group's leadership are New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Houston Mayor Annise Parker.

At Friday's event, Bloomberg said the group demonstrates that marriage equality is not about partisanship or ideology; it's about the common goal of extending basic freedoms to all Americans.

"Throughout American history, it has been the cities that have led the march to freedom, and I believe that the cities of America can do that again with marriage equality," he said.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Annapolis Mayor Joshua Cohen have also joined the group.
