Historian to Lecture on Parenting and Anxiety Thursday

The lecture is free.

Residents will have a chance to revisit their childhood when historian Peter Stearns lectures on how past factors explain parents' anxieties at the Takoma Park Auditorium Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Stearns will offer "an historical overview of our evolving notions of childhood and present evidence of a connection between American parental concerns, in particular – including the famous impulses of “helicopter” parenting – and two waves of historical change in American parenting," according to a release about the event.

Stearns is Provost and Professor of History at George Mason University, positions he has held since 2000. He was named University Professor in January, the highest honor bestowed upon tenured faculty.
