Council Votes To Annex Flower Avenue

Some councilmembers are still concerned over the cost.

Takoma Park City Council voted unanimously Monday night to start the process of annexing Flower Avenue from Piney Branch Road to Carroll Avenue and turn it into a green street. The project is set to start in about a year, Deputy City Manager Suzanne Ludlow said.

Still, some councilmembers, including Josh Wright (Ward 1) were concerned about the cost of the project, which has yet to be established. The city is getting $200,000 from the county and $696,000 from the state to restore the road. But without knowing the cost of the renovation, Wright feared the city would have to dip into it's own budget.

So Wright presented a resolution stating that the road reconstruction could not exceed the money collected from the state and county. It passed 4-3.

Several consultants have said the project could be finished within the $896,000 budget Ludlow said. And Mayor Bruce Williams said he was confident the renovation could be done within budget.

The annexation first came up when the state found out it didn't own parts of 410 in Takoma Park and suggested . Residents did not take kindly to giving 410 for the state, so the city decided  and work with each road separately. There has been no movement on 410 other than verifying city ownership.
