City Gets Grant For New Hampshire Ave Design Plans

Grant will pay for an urban design consultant.

With budgets tight in the city and county, Takoma Park welcomed a $30,000 grant for technical assistance from the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB).

The money will go to contracting an expert in urban design to help figure out the best plan for the New Hampshire Avenue street scape, Takoma Park City Planner Carman Lam said.

The consultant will help develop the design of sidewalks and storm water drains as well as addressing pedestrian needs along the stretch of road.

The street currently offers limited amenity to pedestrians, transit users and cyclists, Lam said. The city has a year to finish the project.

Takoma Park was one of eight applicants to receive a grant and the money that will kickstart the design could bring more grant money in the future, Lam said.

TPB will commence the consultant selection process and the City will work with the selected team of experts to complete the project by June 30, 2012. For more information, contact Carman Lam at (301) 891-7219 or CarmanL@takomagov.org.

Correction: This story incorrectly stated the design would be for New Hampshire Avenue at the Takoma-Langley Crossroads, but it will be for the entire New Hampshire Avenue corridor. We regret the error.
