Update: Piney Branch Elementary School Open For Students

Update, 6 p.m.: Power has been restored to Piney Branch Elementary school and will be open tomorrow for students, MCPS said in a press release.

Update, 6:02 a.m.: One Takoma Park school is still without power after Hurricane Irene and will not open for school today: Piney Branch Elementary School.

Montgomery County Public Schools made the announcement just before 6 a.m. Monday. A total of six MCPS school buildings are still without power.

Montgomery College's Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus is open.

After walloped much of eastern Montgomery County Saturday night, three Takoma Park Schools were left without power. Takoma Park Elementary School, Piney Branch Elementary School and Takoma Park Middle School will not open for their first day Aug. 29 unless power is restored, Montgomery County Public Schools said in a release.

Rolling Terrace Elementary, Sligo Creek Elementary and Montgomery Blair High school, which are all in Silver Spring, but service Takoma Park students do have power and will be open for the first day.

There are a total of 22 schools that remain without power in the county and MCPS will monitor those schools overnight. MCPS will make a final decision by 6 a.m. about the opening of those schools. Each school community without power will receive an automated telephone call updating them about the power restoration efforts, MCPS said.
