Police Arrest Suspect in Sunoco Robbery

A Hyattsville man was arrested by Takoma Park Police armed robbery, robbery and first and second degree assault.

Takoma Park Police arrested a Hyattsville man for a Jan. 5 armed robbery, police said.

Leonard Thomas, Sr. is charged with one count each of armed robbery, robbery, and first and second degree assault.

At around 11:17 a.m, Thomas, 54, entered with two other suspects, one of whom brandished a black, semi-automatic handgun, police said. The suspects demanded property and when the victim did not immediately comply he was assaulted.  The suspects took property and fled the gas station on foot heading north on New Hampshire Avenue near toward Sligo Mill Road.

Police responded to the scene at 11:30 a.m. and shortly thereafter, a Takoma Park police officer spotted one of the suspects near the 6300 block of Eastern Avenue, police said. The officer exited his cruiser and ordered Thomas to the ground. Metropolitan Police arrived on the scene and took custody of the suspect.

Thomas was positively identified as the suspect from the video surveillance that was obtained, police said.

The assaulted victim was taken to the Washington Adventist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police are still searching for the other two suspects and the investigation is on-going.
