November Sees Spike in TP Burglaries

Takoma Park has surpassed last year's total burglaries for the year.

Takoma Park has seen 141 burglaries this year through November according to police statistics. That number is up from 106 last year at the same time. There were 112 total robberies last year.

November had the second highest burglaries of the year with 20, but that spike could have been because of several linked burglaries.

"We did have a high number of residential burglaries, however it should be known that more then half of those occurred in apartment complexes," said Takoma Park Crime Analyst Andrew Gucciardo.

Police have identified a possible suspect that may be responsible for multiple burglaries from those apartments, Gucciardo said.

Gucciardo is working closely with crime analysts in Montgomery County, Rockville, Gaithersburg and the District of Columbia, Takoma Park Police Chief Ricucci said in a statement last month.

"We have sworn uniform and plainclothes officers and detectives, officers in covert cars and detectives working on all these cases," Ricucci said.

After meeting with police chiefs from Montgomery County, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Chevy Chase, Park Police and the Deputy Chief of the District of Columbia to discuss the recent surge in crime in the Washington D.C. area, Ricucci said the common thread is that the majority of the arrests are suspects from D.C.

"This is a new pattern for us," he said.

Takoma Park Police and The Metropolitan Police Department are trying to better their communication to help quell the burglaries.

"They will immediately put our look-outs over the air," Ricucci said. "[Metropolitan Police Department] Deputy Chief Groomes believes that this will correct this long-standing problem."
