Federal Charges in Armed Robbery and Carjacking in Takoma Park

A carjacking victim was shot in the October incident, prosecutors say in an indictment.

Five men, have been charged in connection with a series of armed robberies, including an armored car robbery and a carjacking in Takoma Park in which the victim suffer a gunshot wound.

The defendants charged include Tonnie Floyd, age 21, Marcellus Ramone Freeman (also known as Derrick Relando Pitts), age 22, Anthony Terrell Cannon, age 23, Keith Willie Reed, age 23, and Tobias Richard Dyer, age 21. 

All the defendants are from Washington, DC, with the exception of Dyer, who hails from Upper Marlboro.

The defendants face 10 counts relating to a string of armed robberies and other violent crimes which took place between late October and early December of last year. 

According to a press release from the United States District Attorney's Office, the indictment details a Oct. 26 armed robbery outside a store in the 1300 block of University Boulevard in Takoma Park. Floyd, Freeman and Cannon allegedly obtain a stolen car, robbed a Garda armored transport of approximately $3,900, and fired a gun during the robbery. The trio then tried to escape, but the car was disabled. They then allegedly continued their escape after they carjacked another vehicle, shooting the driver in the process. The car was later found in Washington after having been set on fire.

On Dec. 11, 2012, Reed, Dyer and Cannon again allegedly obtained stolen vehicles and weapons before attempting to rob a BB&T Bank in Arlington, Va. According to the press release, the indictment alleges that the trio then robbed a Loomis armored transport employee at gunpoint outside of a store in Oxon Hill. During the robbery, the Loomis employee was shot before $2,350 was stolen, along with the Loomis employee's .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun. The cars involved in the robberies were later found abandoned in Washington. 

Each defendant faces a maximum of 20 years in prison for conspiracy each count of armed robbery, a maximum life in prison for using, carrying and discharging a weapon during a violent crime, and a maximum of 10 years in prison for transporting stolen vehicles across state lines. 

Floyd, Freeman and Cannon are also facing a maximm of 25 years in prison for their role in the carjacking. 

A preliminary hearing for Freeman has been scheduled for April 16, 2013 at the US District Court in Greenbelt. The other defendants have yet to be scheduled. All defendants are being held in prison pending trial.
