Baltimore County Records Lower Homicide Rate Than 2011

Police report the majority of cases in 2012 involved victims who knew the person accused of killing them.

Baltimore County closed out 2012 with a reduction in the number of homicides compared to the previous year.

The county's 23 homicide cases was seven less than in 2011 and represents a more than 20 percent decrease when compared to the five-year average of homicides in the county.

In a majority of cases last year, the victim knew the person accused in his or her death. Twelve victims were killed in domestic-related incidents, three were killed by acquaintances, and three were killed in non-random, drug-related incidents, according to a statement issued by the Baltimore County Police Department.

In two cases, there was no apparent relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Three other cases remain open. Police do not know if there is any relationship between victim and suspect in those cases.

County police continue to record a clearance rate on homicides that is higher than the national average.

In 2012, homicide detectives cleared nearly 86.9 percent of the cases—just slightly lower than its five year average of 89.8 percent, according to police statistics.

The clearance rate for homicides nationwide in 2011 was 64.8 percent, according to statistics compiled by the FBI.

Harvard Study: Gun Control Is Counterproductive. "Startling as the foregoing may seem, it represents the crossnational norm, not some bizarre departure from it. If the mantra “more guns equal more death and fewer guns equal less death” were true, broad based cross‐national comparisons should show that nations with higher gun ownership per capita consistently have more death. Nations with higher gun ownership rates, however, do not have higher murder or suicide rates than those with lower gun ownership. Indeed many high gun ownership nations have much lower murder rates. Consider, for example, the wide divergence in murder rates among Continental European nations with widely divergent gun ownership rates." "The non‐correlation between gun ownership and murder is reinforced by examination of statistics from larger numbers of nations across the developed world. Comparison of “homicide and suicide mortality data for thirty‐six nations (including the United States) for the period 1990–1995” to gun ownership levels showed “no significant (at the 5% level) association between gun ownership levels and the total homicide rate.”41 Consistent with this is a later European study of data from 21 nations in which “no significant correlations [of gun ownership levels] with total suicide or homicide rates were found.” http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/orgs/jlpp/Vol30_No2_KatesMauseronline.pdf

Far more home are run by single women who tend to not own firearms. "The spread of single-mother families has therefore played a major role in the persistence of poverty. In 1964, when Lyndon Johnson declared a war on poverty, only 30 percent of poor families with children were headed by single mothers. Since the late 1970s the figure has been about 60 percent" http://www.hks.harvard.edu/inequality/Seminar/Papers/ElwdJnck.pdf

Harvard says your wrong Steve. I guess Harvard as a source is not to your liking either?
