Takoma Plays Honored with President's Council Award

The organization promotes play in Takoma Park.

Takoma Plays, a local organization that works toward a promoting outdoor and indoor play as a regular part of lives, was honored as one of 47 groups across the country to receive the President's Council Community Leadership Award.

The groups honored were said to improve the lives of others within their community by providing or enhancing opportunities to engage in sports, physical activities, fitness or nutrition-related programs, according to a news release about the award.

"Groups like TakomaPlays! are working tirelessly to encourage physical activity and proper nutrition to positively impact the health of their communities," Shellie Pfohl, executive director of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition said. "Together we are all working to make our nation a healthier one.”

The next Takoma Plays event will celebrate Father's Day. On June 16, fathers and their children are invited to play at Opal Daniels Park from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

On June 23, Takoma Plays will celebrate International Mud Day at the Takoma Old Town Gazebo with "The Mud Ladies" from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

On June 30, there will be a splash part at Manor Circle from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Water toys and spray bottles welcome.
