Week in Review: Vandalism, Fred Funk and Graduation

 Thursday morning for vandalizing the message board at Takoma Park Middle School, Takoma Park Police said.

Police responded to a loud banging at the school around 1:23 a.m. Thursday and found the six juveniles on the lower roof at the rear of the school, police said. Property belonging to the juveniles was found on the roof, which included tools that aided in the destruction and removal of school property.

Four of the boys were from Takoma Park and two were from Silver Spring, police said.

In golf news, Bethesda might be making news this week with the U.S. Open being held at Congressional Country Club, but Takoma Park and College Park in the event as well.

Fred Funk, a 54-year-old Takoma Park native who grew up in College Park, and captured eight PGA Tour wins between 1989 and 2005, went through the rigors of sectional qualifying to make the tournament. Funk, who currently plays on the Champions Tour, formerly known as the Senior PGA Tour, has played in 19 U.S. Opens in his career with his best finish coming in 2004 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club where he finished sixth. Funk missed the cut this year and did not advance to the third and fourth rounds Saturday and Sunday.
