Five Things You Need to Know: July 8

Some useful and interesting information to start your day.

Five things to know for Friday:

1. The week is ending on a stormy note, with showers expected all morning turning into thunderstorms by afternoon. A flash flood watch is in effect this afternoon through late tonight as the storms are expected to produce heavy rains. High temps today will be in the mid 80s, falling to the 60s by late evening. Rain chances are 80 percent.

2. Montgomery County Council President Valerie Ervin is hosting a public forum this morning on the Takoma/Langley Crossroads Sector Plan, starting at 9:00 at Piney Branch Elementary school. The forum is to get input and answer questions on the area plan, which spans Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and includes Takoma Park. Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker will also be on hand. Check back later today for Patch's coverage of the event.

3. This Day in History: On this date in 1776, the 2,000-pound copper-and-tin bell now known as the Liberty Bell rang out from the tower of what is now Independence Hall, to summon citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Indepdendendence (which was adopted four days earlier but had just been returned from the printer).

4. Keep an ear turned to traffic this morning--partial beltway closures continued well into last evening, following yesterday's rush hour crash that completely shut down the outer loop near New Hampshire Avenue. One man has died of injuries received in the chain-reaction crash, which occurred while he was pulled over changing a tire. Two children and two adults were also injured.

5. Takoma Park officially welcomes a new business to "main street" tomorrow, with the grand opening of Trohv, a unique home and gift store located at 232 Carroll Avenue. The store, opened here in May, offers everything from kitchen gadgets and whimsical gifts to art and furniture--even baby items. This is the shop's second location (the first is in Baltimore). Grand Opening is Saturday 6-9 pm, featuring live music by Funk Master General.

Enjoy your Friday!
