This past week, June 19, 2012, GreenWheaton celebrated its first anniversary with a gala event at Brookside Gardens. There was a great turn out of supporters to enjoy food provided by Wheaton’s well-known Hollywood East and Green Plate Catering.  Special guests included students from Dartmouth College on a nation-wide tour to promote sustainable living.

The students are living on a refurbished bus that runs on waste vegetable oil. They also use solar panels to generate electricity and rely on a super efficient fridge to keep their food cool. Check out this video of the bus’s day in the D.C. area, including scenes from the Gala.  http://youtu.be/4nTsYzv3oLk

You’ll see that in addition to special guests and yummy food, the GreenWheaton Gala featured tables from local businesses and community groups committed to sustainability. There were door prizes, including reusable shopping bags, and experts to speak about home energy efficiency and community volunteerism.

The volunteer Board of GreenWheaton did an amazing job of organizing this event and showcasing the progress Wheaton has made in one short year to create a sustainable community with a healthy environmental footprint.  Thanks to a $15,000 grant from the County Executive, Green Wheaton is committed this next year to increasing outreach to bi-lingual residents and business owners.  There will also be a new public recycling bin program and recycling events for citizens like you.  To help make these activities happen, or just to learn more, join the next GreenWheaton meeting.  The program starts at 7:15 p.m. on the 4th
Tuesday of every month at the Mid-County Services Center.
