Frugal Family: Five Deals to Stretch the Family Budget

Welcome back to our weekly rundown of five local deals to help with your family’s bottom line. Since we do the scouting, we save you time as well as money.

This week, we scoured our local sources and found savings on workouts and fitness (with an after-workout treat). Plus, a deal to earn free gas while you shop (all summer long); a half-price weekly meal discount for students (with a free soda anytime), and eye exam and glasses savings. Remember to check with the merchant for additional conditions, if any:

1. Workout and Fitness Savings: , 7008 Westmoreland Ave., 301-853-3400.

Deals: New guests get to work out free for one week, during their "Spring Into Summer" event. Other specials include a split-the-membership deal (two people, $25), and a free workout or $3 Zumba class.

Good through: One week free and split-the-membership deals end June 30; free workout and $3 Zumba class specials available on June 25 only (during their yard sale day).  Check website for updates, more info and specials.

Deal:  Take a break after that work out and have your choice of a 2-scoop hot  fudge sundae or a 16-oz. "Cappuccino Blast" for $2.99, with their email coupon.

Good through: June 8, with coupon (hurry!).

3. Earn Free Gas: CVS, 110 Carroll Ave., NW, 202-722-7593 (and other locations).

Deal:  CVS ExtraCare Rewards members can earn a $10 gift card to Exxon/Mobil, Shell, BP Amoco or BP Arco every week this summer when you spend $30 on items with the gas tank logo (marked on store shelves and in the weekly CVS/pharmacy circular). Rewards program membership is free.

Good through: August 28.

4. Student Meal Discount (and a free soda!): , 8501 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring, 301-565-8192.

Deal:  Students--get 50 percent off menu prices on Mondays, or a free soda any day of the week. (If you're not a student, you can still get a free order of chips & salsa or a drink by signing up for their rewards club).

Good through: Student meal discount ongoing on Mondays, 1:00-8:00pm; free student soda any day (both at Silver Spring location only). Email club offer ongoing (any location).

5. Eye Glasses (and exam): MyEyeDr, 8525 Georgia Ave., 301-588-3232.

Deals:  Get a complete exam for $49, or two pair of prescription eyeglasses for $99 with their Valpak coupons.
