ROUTES: A Day of Jewish Learning, hosted by the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning, is a unique program of 60 sessions in seven hours held at American University this Sunday.

ROUTES: A Day of Jewish Learning, hosted by the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning, is a unique program of 60 sessions in seven hours. Attendees engage with some of the country’s most inspiring Jewish minds. For many, ROUTES is an introduction to Jewish learning; for some a re-introduction. For others, ROUTES serves as a meaningful continuation of intellectual, spiritual and cultural Judaism in an environment where everyone is welcome to explore.

The Partnership recognized the need to provide continuing education that would inspire minds of all ages and varying affiliations, so the program was launched in 2009 to provide a welcoming, accessible and exciting learning experience for the Jewish population of Greater Washington. This year’s event, held at American University, is expected to attract hundreds of attendees of all ages.

Topics include Jewish mysticism, text study, great books, raising children, Jewish cooking, music and more. This year, there are more than 60 speakers, including the following:

  • Comedian Joel Chasnoff: G.I. Joel: a 24-year-old Stand-up Comic from Chicago Gets Drafted into the Israeli Army
  • Author Erica Brown: A Spiritual Bucket List: Jewish sources and reflective questions used to create a spiritual bucket list
  • Filmmaker Daniel Cohen: “Space Shuttle Columbia: Mission of Hope” screening and discussion
  • Chef Sheilah Kaufman: The History of the Jews and Chocolate
  • Counterterrorism Expert Matthew Levitt:  Senior fellow and director of The Washington Institute for Near East Policy’s Stein Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence speaks on his experiences
  • David Adelman: Family History Meets the 21st Century: The joys of uncovering and preserving your family's stories
  • Rabbi Darby Leigh: Do Our Internet Habits Connect Us to Other People And Create Community, or Do They Isolate Us and Make Us Lonely? - this session will be presented in sign language and be voice interpreted
  • AU faculty member Pam Nadell: The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: Out of Tragedy Comes Social Justice
  • Community Chorus  Zemer Chai with the Robyn Helzner Trio:  Sharing the rich and diverse musical heritage of the Jewish people
  • Dancer Shula Strassfeld: Explore the intersections of Judaism and dance. This session will be a conversation in words and movement.

For a complete list of speakers, please visit the ROUTES web site.

The Partnership is thrilled to share this day of learning with anyone in the community who is interested, so please join us for this exciting opportunity to explore a plethora of fascinating subject areas on Sunday.
