VIDEO: National Geographic Birds of Paradise Opens

National Geographic fanatics will soon be able to travel to New Guinea without even leaving the nation’s capital.

The museum opens the exhibition Birds of Paradise: Amazing Avian Evolution on Nov. 1 and it goes through early May. It’s located at 1145 17th St. N.W. in Washington, DC and open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The exhibition will reveal 39 species of birds and their innate courtship dances among other behaviors. This exhibition was a result of research by photographer Tim Laman and Cornell Lab of Ornithology scientist Edwin Scholes.

Laman and Scholes started their partnership in 2004.

During their expeditions over eight years, they spent time documenting the lives of birds-of-paradise. The birds are known for their unique looks, mating rituals including sexual selection.

Visitors will be able to dive into the groundbreaking research, learn brand new information about each of the 39 species, photographed for the first time in history.

Admission is $8 for adults; $6 for National Geographic members, military, students, seniors and groups of 25 or more; $4 for children ages 5-12; and free (reservation required) for school, student and youth groups (age 18 and under).
