Top Five Golfers At This Week's Senior PGA Tour Event in Potomac

Takoma Park native Fred Funk tops our list of "people to watch" at the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

Ok, so I know this is a list about people playing golf in Potomac, but there is a link to Takoma Park here, trust me. Plus, it's a major senior tour stop, right around the corner from us. Since this is the senior tour, a lot of these guys are the ones I grew up watching when they were on the regular tour, so I have some fond memories. Here are the top five golfers to watch at the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.

1. Fred Couples

Why? I grew up watching Fred Couples play on the PGA tour. I even tried to emulate his smooth swing when I played gold in high school. Alas, I did not succeed.

2. Tom Watson

Why? There is no debating that Watson is a legend. He is one of the great golfers of the second half of the twentieth century. He's won eight majors and, last year, at the age of 60, he almost won the British Open.

3. Bernhard Langer

Why? He's German, so that's pretty cool. Also, he won The Masters-- my personal favorite major-- twice. He was the first player ever to be ranked number one when the ranking system was created in 1986.

4. Corey Pavin

Why? I don't know that any golf fan can forget his U.S. Open win over Greg Norman in 1995 at Shinnecock Hill Country Club. Pavin just joined the Senior Tour this year and should be a contender.

5. Fred Funk

Why? He's from Takoma Park. See, I told you I'd get there. Other than having a cool name, Funk has been a powerhouse on the Senior circuit. He's won three majors, including last year's Senior U.S. Open.
