'George' Comes to Kensington

The Kensington Arts Theatre is putting on the classic Sondheim musical.

If you're looking for a dash of pointillism with your evening entertainment, the Kensington Arts Theatre may have just the thing.

The troupe is performing Stephen Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park with George," a Pulitzer- and Tony-winning musical about the making of one of Georges Seurat's most famous paintings.

The play follows the gradual completion of Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," and director Craig Pettinati is using a video projector to superimpose the painting onto the set.

Pettinati told the Gazette that the play's innovative staging makes it an uncommon choice for community theater, but that KAT is prepared for the challenge.

The play's second act focuses on Seurat's fictional great-grandson, George, a modern artist struggling to be seen in the 20th century's bloated cultural landscape.

The show runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. in the . Tickets are $20 and available on the group's website.
