Four Poets Set for April's Third Thursday

Don Berger was appointed Takoma Park's first Poet Laureate in 2005.

Four poets from divergent backgrounds will be showcased in April at the Third Thursday poetry night April 21, 7:30 p.m.,  at the Takoma Park Community Center Auditorium, 7500 Maple Ave.

Mary Beth Hatem is a long-time resident of Takoma Park and has been sharing her poems in DC-area venues for more than 20 years. She has been the managing editor of three research-to-practice professional journals, focused on professional practice in clinical engineering and drug abuse treatment and prevention.

Sally Rosen Kindred is author of Garnet Lanterns, winner of the Anabiosis Press Chapbook Prize. A Margaret Knight Sanford Creative Writing Scholar at Duke University, she received her MFA from the University of Maryland. Her awards include the Anne Flexner Poetry Prize, an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Maryland State Arts Council, and a residency at the Mary Anderson Center for the Arts. She has taught creative writing at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. She lives in Columbia, Md.

Joshua Prentice is a native of Washington DC and an internationally published poet under the name Joshua Gray. He writes monthly articles for Zouch Magazine and Miscellany on the culture of poetry and is a contributor to the blog for 32poems publication. His own poetry website is here.

Don Berger, appointed Takoma Park's first Poet Laureate in 2005, studied at the Universities of Massachusetts and Washington. He has taught language, literature and writing for over 30 years, most recently at the University of Maryland and Montgomery College in Maryland. He has published one book of poems, Quality Hill (Lost Roads Publishers), and a chapbook, The Cream-Filled Muse (Fledermaus Press). His poems and prose have appeared in many publications including The New Republic, Conjunctions, Slate, Colorado Review, TriQuarterly, and The Iowa Review.
