Free Screening of WE ARE EGYPT

WE ARE EGYPT, a documentary film about the background to Egypt's democracy movement, will be screened at the Takoma Park Community Center on Thursday, February 9 as a free program which is open to the public.

This screening is organized by the Silver Spring-based film nonprofit, Docs In Progress and is presented as part of the city's We Are Takoma series.  This program is supported by funding from the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County and the Maryland Humanities Council.

ABOUT THE FILM

Months before 2011's momentous uprising in Egypt, many talked of a revolution - but no one knew when that day would come.   The 85-minute film showcases Egypt's passionate democracy activists who toiled for years before seeing success from their sacrifice.  It is an account of their struggle against extraordinary odds to remove an uncompromising authoritarian regime determined to stay in power. This is the story behind the story of the Arab Spring.

Following the screening, filmmaker Lillie Paquette will answer audience questions about the making of the film and what is going on in Egypt. Paquette has an academic and professional background in international affairs with a specialization in mass media, public opinion, and the Middle East. She learned how to make documentaries at Docs In Progress where she produced her very first documentary about an immigrant small business owner in downtown Silver Spring.
