Best Weekend Bets: We Are Takoma Series Kicks Off

There are several ways to fill your weekend in and around Takoma Park, including the first event in the We Are Takoma Series.

It's supposed to be sunny and in the low 80s all weekend so it will be good weather to get outside and see the 34th Annual Maryland Renaissance Festival at Revel Grove in Crownsville.  There is jousting, jesters,  food and games. The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The We Are Takoma art series kicks off Sunday night. Oreka TX, a duo from Spain that play the txalaparta, a xylophone-like instrument that requires two people, will be playing at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Takoma Park Community Center auditorium. The series will offer a schedule of free concerts, dances, poetry readings and lectures. The series is the result of a two-week run of events held over the summer.  Takoma Park City Council decided to go ahead and keep going with the concept and turned it into We Are Takoma.

If visual art is your thing, the Takoma Park Artists Guild has a weekly exhibit on Fridays featuring a variety of artwork by members of the Guild. Artwork will be exhibited in the Atrium Gallery on the main level of the Takoma Park Community Center at 7500 Maple Ave.
