Come and get the sovereign cure for what ails you at Big Medicine’s Old-Timey String Band Extravaganza, Saturday Oct 19, 2013 at 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM at the Washington Ethical Society Auditorium, 7750 16th Street, NW, Washington D.C.

“Medicine shows” were once a staple of rural entertainment.  Quack doctors would pay the best string bands they could find to travel with them.  The musicians would attract an audience and then the “doctor” would demonstrate cures for everything from lumbago to broken hearts.  Was it the alcohol in the patent medicines that cured the afflicted or the intoxicating music produced by the band?  Find out at Big Medicine’s performance!

In the tradition of old-time medicine shows, Big Medicine distills an addictive mixture of deep-rooted old-time mountain music, early style bluegrass, original songs, and fresh arrangements.  Big Medicine lovingly adapts the string band music of the rural South to modern ears.  You’ll hear old-time melodies and mountain harmonies, ancient ballads and archaic fiddle tunes, heart songs, hollers and hymns performed on banjo, fiddle, guitar and bass in fresh new ways that are still true to the tradition.
