A bright, joy-filled musical pageant is in the offing at Nowell Sing We Clear’s holiday concert at the Washington Ethical Society on Saturday, December 21 at 3:00 p.m.  Since 1975, Nowell Sing We Clear has enchanted DC audiences with its vast repertoire of Christmas/winter solstice songs, carols, stories and rituals drawn from English-language traditions.  With its joyous celebration featuring glorious music, colorful costumes and plenty of audience participation, Nowell Sing We Clear has become a seasonal ritual for folk music fans throughout the East Coast.

Nowell Sing We Clear consists of John Roberts and Tony Barrand, widely known for their lively presentations of English folk songs, and Fred Breunig and Andy Davis, well known in New England as dance callers and musicians.  Nowell’s performances always incorporate unusual elements such as the performance of mummers’ plays and folk dramas which symbolize the death of the land at midwinter and its subsequent rebirth in the spring.  While much of the singing is unaccompanied, the group also performs energetic dance music on fiddle, button accordion, electric piano, drums, and concertina.

Nowell Sing We Clear’s performance for FSGW will also be a celebration of the group’s newest CD release, “Bidding You Joy” which will be available for purchase along with Nowell’s other recordings.  Advance tickets for Nowell Sing We Clear’s Holiday Concert are available at https://fsgw-nowell.brownpapertickets.com/.
