County Council Debriefing on County's and Pepco's Response to June 29 Storm

A debriefing on the response to the June 29 "derecho" storm left, four days after the storm, about 100,000 Pepco customers in Montgomery County without power and more than 100 of the county’s 800 traffic signals inoperable.

Maryland Public Service Commission Chairman Doug Nazarian will explain how the PSC will assess Pepco's performance in restoring power. Joe Rigby, Pepco CEO and board chairman, has been invited to talk about the company's response. County Executive Isiah Leggett has been invited to discuss the county's response. Maryland Del. Brian Feldman and Sen. Rob Garagiola, who sit on General Assembly committees with jurisdiction over utilities, also are scheduled to present.

The nine-member Montgomery County Council meets in session every Tuesday and throughout the week in legislative committees focusing on education;  health and human services; management and fiscal policy; planning, housing and economic development, public safety and transportation, infrastructure, energy and environment.

The council comprises five members elected from districts and four elected at large countywide. Council members are elected to four year terms. All nine seats are up for election in the same year.

The council president and vice president are elected by their colleagues and serve one-year terms.

The council meets at the Stella B. Werner Council Office Building, which has hearing rooms on the third and seventh floors and offices for legislative staff.
