O'Malley Backs Brown 'No Matter What Lies Ahead'

Gov. Martin O'Malley said Monday that he's backing his lieutenant governor's political future—whatever that might be.

The Democratic governor, in an email from his campaign, called on Anthony Brown to "continue his public service and pursue the greatest possible level of public responsibility."

"No matter what lies ahead for Anthony in public service, I know that I will be with him 100 percent, because I believe that our State, our communities, and all Marylanders will benefit greatly with Anthony bringing people together to work for our shared priorities," O'Malley said in the email.

But what exactly is Brown running for?

The odds-on favorite is that Brown will run for governor in 2014 but he hasn't formally declared.

Brown is raising campaign cash and is expected to deliver the keynote speech next week at the Maryland Association of Counties Convention in Ocean City—a speech typically delivered by the sitting governor.

Several other prominent Democrats are also thought to be eying the job including state Comptroller Peter Franchot, Attorney General Doug Gansler and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.

Here's the full text of O'Malley's email (including the bold print used for certain sentences):

Dear Friend,

I consider myself fortunate for a number of reasons: the privilege to serve the people of Maryland, the ability to make a real difference in the lives of families, and the opportunity to move our great State forward through difficult economic times.

I am also fortunate that I have had a true partner in governing from the day I took office – your Lieutenant Governor, and my friend, Anthony Brown. Anthony is an outstanding public servant, and I have seen first-hand the results we’ve achieved becaused of Anthony’s leadership on efforts to create jobs, improve healthcare, and make college more affordable for more families.

No matter what lies ahead for Anthony in public service, I know that I will be with him 100 percent, because I believe that our State, our communities, and all Marylanders will benefit greatly with Anthony bringing people together to work for our shared priorities.

As Lieutenant Governor, Anthony has pushed hard to get our economic initiatives passed to protect our investments in education and job creation. He is nationally recognized for his leadership on behalf of our veterans, and he has developed groundbreaking new laws to protect victims of domestic violence.

The challenges facing Maryland have not been easy, and our progress would not have been possible without Anthony’s leadership and determination. Together, we’ve made the largest investment in our State’s history in public education, and Maryland’s public schools have been ranked number one in the nation four years in a row. Together, we have been able to maintain Maryland’s Triple A bond rating. And together, we’ve been able to recover 65 percent of jobs lost during the Great Recession and keep our unemployment rate more than 15 percent below the national average.

Throughout all of these challenges, Anthony has been by my side every step of the way. He has taken the lead on some of the most difficult measures our administration has pursued, from expanding and improving the delivery of health care and eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicaid, to strengthening Maryland laws protecting neglected children, to taking guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. He has leveraged legislative experience, consensus-building skills, and intelligence to pass many of our most critical priorities.

We have to work hard to make sure this progress continues well into the future, and that our State continues to move forward. For these reasons and more, I urge Anthony to continue his public service and pursue the greatest possible level of public responsibility. He has been my partner day in and day out, and he understands what needs to be done to make sure our state moves forward, not back.

After nearly six years of working together, I know that Anthony understands better than anyone how our government works, and more importantly, how to ensure it works best to improve the lives of our citizens. More than any other public official, Anthony Brown has my complete trust in his ability to serve the best interests of Maryland.

Over the coming months, I will be working hard to make sure Maryland benefits from Anthony’s continued leadership and that the progress we have made together continues well into the future. I hope you will join me in supporting Anthony in his commitment to build on the progress we’ve made in the years to come.

Sincerely,

Martin O’Malley

Just what we need….more taxes, taxes, fees, fees. and more taxes and fees. Maryland cannot take more Democrat tax and fee increases. It is killing us! Vote Republican in 2012 and in 2014. Get Ben Cardin out of office now. Vote Republicans for Congress - we need to reign in the spending of our money by career politicians and in Maryland that means the Democrats. We are a 'one-party' state but that doesn't mean we are doomed to be for all of eternity. The Republicans have a great cache of candidates for all offices this year and for Governor in 2014.

The Republicans are incapable of running a decent candidate. Even their bench is weak.

Frank,

You're right. It is only the Republicans engaging in shenanigans during elections. How do you have the time to post here, aren't you and you ilk busy enlisting the Black Panthers and suing Ohio in your efforts to suppress the vote? Curious....

Why do you misstate the facts behind the lawsuit in Ohio. Do you think we don't read? Or you just want to confuse more Fox minions about the facts? Just to irritate those who know the facts? Why?

Please just answer why you do that? I am sincere about that question.

Fifa,

First I stated no facts concerning the lawsuit. Simply said the DEMS are suing Ohio to suppress the vote. Simply an opinion, but how else would you characterize the lawsuit. The fact is they are suing so a law in Ohio that would extended early voting for military personnel three days beyond what other voters in the state are entitled, from going into effect. The Obama admin wants to extend early voting for all and not simply single out the military. Is that pretty accurate Fifa or do I need to expand more? Heck, I'll quote MSNBC or HUFFPO if that makes you feel better. My comments where directed at the "mightier than thou" proclamation that voter malfeasance is somehow the purview of one political party. If you weren't so blinded by ideology you would see that as well. Finally, I'm not a Republican nor do I "bow" at the alter of Fox to get my facts. However, based on your comments your bias comes through pretty clear.

At least Patrick you have improved your response but still it is intended to deceive. By suing to extend voting for all persons they are "suppressing" the vote? Of course not, just state the truth.

There is no bias in my statement, you intended to mislead, just like Fox, with your statement that they "suing to suppress the vote". A pathetic liar you are, as your own follow-up admits.

Gosh I hate liars and deceivers like you.

Mitt Romney wrongly suggests the Obama campaign is trying to “undermine” the voting rights of military members through a lawsuit filed in Ohio. The suit seeks to block state legislation that limited early voting times for nonmilitary members; it doesn’t seek to impose restrictions on service members.

Repeating LIES does not make them true, it just makes the person tellling them a LIAR.

Sign the Petition at Vote Vets. Our military fights for our right to vote and yet the Teapublicans are working hard at voter supression:

He's the guy who's always standing up there next to O'Malley, looking like he just woke up and doesn't know what to do so, he just nods in agreement with whatever King O'Malley proclaims. This guy is a total zero.

You Teabuggerers are something else. You sign a petition against the DREAM act which negatively affects Veterans and now you bash a Colonel in the Army Reserve. Why do you guys hat e the military so much?

I have nothing against the Military, but military service does not necessarily make one the ideal choice to lead a state.

But you should also support not disrespecting the man.

It is simply my opinion that as a Lieutenant Governor, Brown has been fairly worthless. Maybe I should have said, "... a total zero as Lieutenant Governor".

Why would anyone want their entitlements cut? That's like ordering a steak at a restaurant and asking the server for only half. "I'm not worthy of the whole steak".

I heard Brown was never a good soldier and he had been in the brig a few times. The source said he was a drunk and always in trouble. I don't know if it's true but that is the word I got from Harry Reid.

I believe the Patch once again has incorrectly quoted the Governor.

The correct quoute - "No matter what lies are ahead."
Also, he did say he supported Lt. Governor Anthony Greene.
Go figure.

Dear Pat - if you run, you'll probably win, given that Maryoand has a single party system. Here's two hints. 1) Hire a geographer and don't tick us off by splitting our communities and trying to hand-pick our representatives. 2) Get someone who will act in the public's interest on the PSC.
