Chuck Brown Dies, Share Your Memories

The Washington D.C. music scene lost a titan today. How did Brown's music impact your life?

Update: 6:30 p.m. -  Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker has issued a press release expressing his condolences over the passing of local music legend Chuck Brown.  The statement reads in full:  “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and countless fans of Chuck Brown.  It is a sad day for so many in Prince George’s County, the Washington region, and throughout the world. Chuck Brown left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds with his very distinctive voice and incredible genre of music that he created, Go-Go. He was an icon whose music inspired so many and become the sound that defined modern-day Washington, DC and Prince George’s County. Tap Studio Reopens with Takoma Park Location

The new studio is on Willow Street, across from the Takoma Park CVS.

Knock on Wood Tap Studio is coming back to where it all started. The studio opened its doors in Takoma Park 15 years ago before moving to Silver Spring. In Spring 2011, that Silver Spring location closed. But in the words of Knock of Wood board member Debbie Grossman, "Our studio has sprung back." And it's coming back to Takoma Park. The new location is on Willow Street across from the CVS. Hundreds of new students have signed up, according to Grossman. The studio will be putting on a showcase June 10, featuring current students along with a number of special guests. It will be at 2 p.m. at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. Tickets are $10 each and kids five and under get in free.

El Golfo Hosts Takoma Cabaret

The event will be on first and third Friday of each month.

The nightlife in Takoma Park is a little more deverse now with El Golfo restaurant hosting the Takoma Cabaret. The event will be held every first and third Friday and admission is based on a sliding scale. The first performance is May 18 from 9 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. El Golfo recently built a stage and added stage lights, according to a news release about the event. Takoma Park Poetry Series Features Open Reading

Anne Higgins will be the featured poet.

This month's Third Thursday Poetry Reading will feature Anne Higgins as well as a chance for new poets to come out for an open reading. The reading is on May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Takoma Park Community Center and admission is free. Anne Higgins's poetry has been published in a variety of small magazines and Garrison Keillor has read two of her poems on The Writer’s Almanac. She has published five volumes of poetry over the last 12 years and teaches at Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg.

Flower Avenue Market Moves to Sunday

It will reopen Sunday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  The Flower Avenue (Flea) Market waves goodbye to Saturday and reopens Sunday, April 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shoppers can find a different mix of vendors and treasures each week at the market located at 8809 Flower Ave. Some of the goodies available include antiques, art, collectibles, hand-made jewelry, toys, clothing and accessories, decorative glass, china, hand-carved safari animals, CDs, records and a great selection of hand bags made by the Long Branch Women’s Sewing Circle. There are also activities for the kids including a moon bounce tent to give kids a  chance to jump all over the place for $1. Takoma Park Searches for Recycling Artist-in-Residence

Applications are due Apr. 30.

Art and environmental awareness are two pretty visible causes in Takoma Park and now the city government has created a position to fuse the two. Takoma Park’s Arts and Humanities Commission is soliciting applications for its first Recycling Artist-in-Residence Program. The program and studio space will be located on the grounds of the city's newly renovated, LEED certified Public Works facility, according to a news release. The selected artist will use reclaimed and repurposed materials in all work created during the residency. The Artist–in-Residence Program will run from July 1 to August 31 and includes: The deadline for applications is April 30.

Takoma Park Play Day Gets Children Active

Play Day is set this year for Sept. 22.

In an effort to inspire children to be more active and creative, Takoma Park Mayor Bruce R. Williams has proclaimed September 22, 2012 as "Play Day," a fun-filled day for children to engage their minds and bodies with both physical and mental play. This city-wide event was signed into effect by the City Council making it the fourth annual Play Day. "Play Day is about encouraging creativity, getting the children away from electronic entertainment, and letting them interact with each other through physical activity," Councilman Terry Seamans said.
